There aren’t many teams entering 2026 with a roster more complete than Oregon’s.

The Ducks open the season ranked No. 2 in both the AP and Coaches polls—the highest preseason ranking in program history—after consecutive 13-win seasons under Dan Lanning. Oregon has reached the College Football Playoff in each of the last two seasons and returns enough talent to make another legitimate run at a national championship.

It starts with quarterback Dante Moore. Rather than enter the NFL Draft, Moore returned to Eugene after completing 71.8% of his passes for 3,565 yards, 30 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions last season. He now enters 2026 as one of the nation’s premier quarterbacks and a legitimate Heisman Trophy contender.

Boise State isn’t walking into Autzen without experience, though.

Quarterback Maddux Madsen returns after throwing for 2,334 yards and 18 touchdowns last season despite missing three games. More importantly, Boise State has a potentially dangerous rushing combination with Dylan Riley and Sire Gaines, who combined for 1,936 rushing yards in 2025. Riley led the way with 1,125 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Boise State also has history on its side. The Broncos are 3-1 all-time against Oregon, and the Ducks’ only victory in the series was hardly comfortable. Oregon escaped with a 37-34 win in 2024, using a field goal in the final seconds to survive at Autzen Stadium.

This Oregon roster is substantially better equipped to control the matchup this time around, but Boise State has enough veterans to make the Ducks earn it.

3 Key Storylines

1. Can Boise State run the football against Oregon’s defensive front?

This is Boise State’s best path to making the game competitive.

Riley and Gaines give the Broncos one of the better running back combinations outside the Power Four. If Boise State can consistently pick up four or five yards on early downs, extend drives and keep Moore standing on the Oregon sideline, the Broncos can shorten the game.

The problem is the defense waiting for them.

Oregon’s front features A’Mauri Washington, Matayo Uiagalelei, Teitum Tuioti and Bear Alexander, giving the Ducks an abundance of size and NFL-level talent near the line of scrimmage.

Boise State doesn’t need to dominate Oregon on the ground. It does, however, need to avoid becoming one-dimensional. If Madsen is repeatedly facing third-and-long inside a loud Autzen Stadium, things could get ugly quickly.

2. What does Dante Moore’s encore look like?

Moore enters this season with a dramatically different set of expectations.

Last year was about proving he could become an elite college quarterback. This year is about whether he can lead Oregon to a national championship.

He certainly won’t lack weapons.

Running backs Jordon Davison and Dierre Hill Jr. return after combining for more than 1,300 rushing yards last season, and Oregon once again possesses the depth and athleticism to attack defenses in multiple ways.

Boise State’s defense doesn’t necessarily need to shut Moore down. It needs to create a couple of negative plays, force a turnover, and prevent Oregon from turning five-yard completions into explosive touchdowns.

If Moore is comfortable from the opening drive, the talent disparity could become apparent quickly.

3. Can Boise State make Oregon uncomfortable again?

The last meeting matters—not necessarily because the personnel is the same, but because Boise State knows winning in Autzen isn’t some impossible task.

The Broncos came within seconds of doing it in 2024.

But that Boise State team also had Ashton Jeanty, who rushed for 192 yards and three touchdowns against Oregon. There isn’t another Jeanty walking through that door Saturday.

Boise State will have to manufacture that production collectively.

The longer this stays close, the more pressure shifts toward Oregon. The Ducks are supposed to contend for a national championship. More than three touchdowns at home favor them. Boise State has considerably less to lose.

Oregon’s objective should be simple: score early, take away Boise State’s running game, and eliminate any belief that another Autzen upset could be coming.

GDC Betting Breakdown

Spread Pick: Oregon -24.5

That’s a massive number against a program as established as Boise State, but this feels like a matchup where Oregon’s advantages eventually compound.

Boise State’s 2025 losses are particularly concerning. In its five defeats, the Broncos scored seven points four times and 10 points once. When Boise State’s offense stalled, it stalled completely.

Oregon possesses exactly the type of defensive front capable of producing that outcome.

The Broncos can keep this competitive early on behind Madsen and their running backs, but asking Boise State’s offensive line to survive four quarters against Oregon’s front is a different matter.

If Oregon gets ahead by two scores and forces Boise State away from the running game, this has the potential to open up considerably in the second half.

Pick: Oregon -24.5

Total Pick: Under 51.5

The number is low for an Oregon game, but that is precisely because the Ducks’ defense could dictate how this matchup plays out.

Boise State’s clearest offensive strategy should involve Riley, Gaines, and long possessions. Oregon has little reason to turn the opener into a track meet if it establishes control.

A game where Oregon reaches the mid-to-upper 30s while Boise State struggles to get beyond the low teens puts the Under squarely in play.

The biggest concern is Oregon creating short fields or defensive scores that inflate the total.

Pick: Under 51.5

Moneyline Pick: Pass

Oregon should win this football game.

At roughly -4000, however, there’s virtually no reason to make the moneyline part of a straight wager. Boise State’s +1600 number is tempting only because of the payout, not because there’s enough probability behind the upset to justify making it a GDC pick.

Take Oregon against the spread if you want to back the Ducks.

Pick: Pass

⭐ GDC Best Bet: Under 51.5

Oregon’s offense will get most of the national attention, but its defense is the biggest reason to like the Under.

Boise State wants to run the football. Oregon should be able to limit that running game. If the Ducks force Madsen to consistently beat them through the air while dealing with one of the nation’s best defensive fronts, Boise State could struggle to generate touchdowns.

Oregon doesn’t need 45 points to win this game comfortably.

Confidence: 7.5/10

GDC Final Prediction

Oregon 38, Boise State 13

Boise State has enough veteran talent to make the first quarter interesting, but Oregon has significant advantages at nearly every position.

Expect the Broncos to lean heavily on Riley and Gaines early and attempt to keep Moore off the field. Eventually, Oregon’s defensive line takes control, Boise State becomes more dependent on the passing game, and the Ducks begin creating short fields.

Moore doesn’t need to put together a Heisman-defining performance in Week 1. He needs to distribute the football, protect it, and allow Oregon’s overwhelming depth to take over.

Boise State will have better days ahead as it begins its first season in the new Pac-12. Asking the Broncos to open that season against the No. 2 team in the country at Autzen Stadium, however, is an enormous assignment.

Oregon handles business and begins its championship pursuit with a convincing win.

Final Picks

  • Spread: Oregon -24.5
  • Total: Under 51.5
  • Moneyline: Pass
  • Best Bet: ⭐ Under 51.5
