The College Football Playoff National Championship is already one of the biggest events on the college football calendar. In January, the championship weekend will expand to showcase another rapidly growing version of the sport. This is the CFP Flag Football Showcase.
The College Football Playoff and International Flag League, better known as iFlag, are partnering to launch the inaugural CFP Flag Football Showcase. This event is part of the festivities surrounding the 2027 CFP National Championship in Las Vegas.
The three-day event is scheduled for January 22-24, 2027, leading up to the CFP National Championship on Monday, January 25, at Allegiant Stadium. The showcase will feature competition ranging from youth teams to high school girls. Additionally, there will be adult men’s, women’s and coed divisions.
For college football fans making the trip to Las Vegas, the partnership adds another competitive football event to an already packed championship weekend. Meanwhile, it places one of the country’s fastest-growing sports directly in front of the college football audience.
Flag Football Comes to CFP Fan Central

According to iFlag, select playoff and championship games will be played indoors at the Las Vegas Convention Center. That venue will also host CFP Fan Central throughout the weekend.
CFP Fan Central runs from Friday, January 22 through Sunday, January 24 in the West Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center. The free, family-friendly event traditionally allows fans to experience the national championship beyond simply attending the game.
The CFP says Fan Central will feature games, clinics, pep rallies, autograph signings, special guest appearances and exhibits celebrating college football and its history. Admission to CFP Fan Central is free. It also does not require a ticket.
Bringing championship-level flag football competition into that environment creates another draw for fans. Furthermore, it allows flag football athletes to compete on a stage directly connected to the College Football Playoff.
Who Can Play in the CFP Flag Football Showcase?
One of the most notable parts of the event is that it isn’t reserved exclusively for invited elite teams.
The tournament is open invite, meaning teams do not have to qualify before registering for the showcase. Registration is scheduled to open Wednesday, September 16 at 7 p.m. ET.
iFlag lists divisions spanning youth ages 6U through 18U, high school girls 7-on-7, adult men’s, adult women’s, and adult coed competition.
Adult divisions include several styles and competitive levels, such as 5-on-5 Air-it-Out, 5-on-5 non-contact, 5-on-5 contact, and 6-on-6 contact formats.
Entry prices currently begin at $425 per team, with referee fees included. Teams can initially reserve a spot with a $50 deposit.
Tournament play will include a three-game guarantee, with pool play followed by single-elimination playoffs. Every participating team advances to the postseason bracket.
There will also be more than a trophy on the line.
The showcase is listed as an iFlag regional qualifier, with winners receiving three times the ranking points along with opportunities to earn bids to future iFlag events. Winning teams can also qualify for iFlag Nationals and Worlds.
The Timing Couldn’t Be Much Better for Flag Football
The CFP partnership comes during a period of tremendous growth for flag football at nearly every level of the sport.
In January 2026, the NCAA officially added women’s flag football to its Emerging Sports for Women program. This came after representatives from Divisions I, II and III approved the move.
At the time, NCAA data showed at least 40 schools planned to sponsor varsity flag football during the 2025-26 academic year. However, sport leaders projected that number could reach approximately 60 programs by spring 2026.
The sport has already moved another step closer to becoming a full NCAA championship sport.
In May, the NCAA Committee on Access, Opportunity and Impact formally recommended legislation creating a National Collegiate Flag Football Championship. If all three NCAA divisions approve the necessary legislation, the first NCAA championship could be held as soon as spring 2028.
And the NCAA isn’t the only major sports organization taking notice.
Flag football is also scheduled to make its Olympic debut at the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles. This gives the sport an international stage unlike anything it has previously experienced.
That makes the CFP’s involvement particularly noteworthy.
College football has one of the largest and most passionate fan bases in American sports. Putting competitive flag football alongside one of college football’s premier events introduces the sport to an audience already invested in football. In addition, it gives young athletes another highly visible platform.
Another Addition to a Massive CFP Championship Weekend
Las Vegas will become the center of the college football world in January.
The CFP National Championship is scheduled for Monday, January 25, 2027, at Allegiant Stadium. However, the championship experience will span several days.
In addition to CFP Fan Central and the new flag football showcase, Championship Campus is expected to feature Media Day, AT&T Playoff Playlist Live!, the Trophy Trot, Taste of the Championship and the Allstate Championship Tailgate.
The addition of the CFP Flag Football Showcase makes championship weekend even more football-focused.
Fans can watch the two best teams in the country compete for the College Football Playoff National Championship on Monday night. At the same time, they will get an up-close look at another version of football that continues to build momentum across youth, high school, collegiate and international competition.
Why the CFP-iFlag Partnership Matters
The significance of this partnership extends beyond simply adding another activity to Fan Central.
Flag football is quickly developing legitimate pathways from youth competition into high school and college athletics, and eventually onto the Olympic stage. Connecting the sport with the College Football Playoff gives those athletes exposure within one of football’s most recognizable championship environments.
For younger players in particular, competing during CFP championship weekend could become a memorable experience. It is also one that illustrates just how quickly opportunities within flag football are expanding.
The traditional version of college football will remain the centerpiece when the national championship is decided at Allegiant Stadium.
But during the days leading up to kickoff, some of the next generation of football players will have their own opportunity to compete for a championship in Las Vegas.
And with flag football’s trajectory continuing upward, the inaugural CFP Flag Football Showcase could be the beginning of another championship-weekend tradition.
