It’s rare for a storyline leading up to a game to outshine the actual game. That’s what’s in store Saturday night, though. Lane Kiffin returns to Ole Miss after betraying them by leaving them at the altar of the CFP for arch-rival LSU, before whatever unholy scene awaits Saturday night for Kiffin’s return. Take a look back with me on some other hostile returns in college football.

Lane Kiffin to Tennessee 2021
In a hostile return, of course, we have to start with the king of hostility, Lane Kiffin. After his famous midnight exit from Knoxville, the Vol army waited a decade for the snake to return, and they were ready.
The Vol faithful pelted Kiffin with everything from golf balls to mustard bottles. You can joke about how that got past stadium security, but the fact that it did is part of college football’s charm.
This game also brought to light the “injury” strategy Kiffin employed at Ole Miss before rules halted it. That questionable fourth-down spot against UT is what made this night infamous. The fans threw the aforementioned objects onto the field. The golf ball actually hit Kiffin, and he casually pocketed it as he’d just putted in for par. The villain got the last laugh that night with Kiffin taking a 31-26 win.
Nick Saban to LSU 2008

Soon, though, an elephant in crimson came calling to bring Saban back to the SEC with Alabama. While it was euphoria in Tuscaloosa, it was treason in Baton Rouge.
While LSU would get the one up on Saban, beating him en route to the Natty in 2007, the Tiger faithful were salivating to hang their traitor when he came back to the bayou in 2008. Quite literally, they burned Saban (albeit a dummy) at the stake before the game.
The stadium was packed two hours before kickoff with unholy jeers and chants at him. Saban has spoken about his return and how it was the most hostile environment he has faced in his career. As we all know, Saban, as usual, would get the last laugh, winning an underrated classic between the rivals in overtime and launching the greatest dynasty in college football history at Alabama, not LSU. Tiger fans still feel stung to this day (despite two titles of their own) that Saban and “The Process” left. The worst part is who he left for.
Baker Mayfield to Texas Tech 2016
Embed from Getty ImagesIn today’s game, players leaving is treated as normal, and in-conference transfers get some boos if they return, but nothing out of the ordinary. Just a decade ago, it was different. While Mayfield may have been immortalized in Norman, his legendary grit began in Lubbock.
Walking onto Texas Tech in 2013 and winning the starting gig going 5-0 before injuries, Baker looked set up with Tech for the long haul. Then questions about a scholarship and a fractured relationship with his coach, Kliff Kingsbury, led Mayfield not just to transfer but to transfer in conference to Oklahoma.
At the time, intra-conference transfers were prohibited from playing for one season after a transfer. Mayfield requested immediate eligibility, feeling wronged by Texas Tech, but the Red Raiders refused. Mayfield was a household name by the time he returned to West Texas in 2016.
This only enflamed the chip-on-his-shoulder persona more and led to more vitriol from Lubbock. Mayfield was kicked out of a restaurant the night before the game and needed police escorts after the game. Nobody remembers this, though- why? The game was one for the ages: Mayfield threw for 545 yards and 7 touchdowns, and OU needed every one to escape with a shootout winner over some kid named Patrick Mahomes, who led Tech. This beef has been squashed, though, as Mayfield and Kingsbury have buried the hatchet. Tech fans now direct their hate at OU for leaving the Big 12 for the SEC.
Clay Helton to USC 2025

Leading a once-proud program, giving fans hope with a couple of truly elite seasons before returning to middling mediocrity and getting canned. Somehow, since Pete Carroll’s departure, the coach who was at USC the longest is the most hated.
Despite having massive talent on his rosters, Helton resembled Big Game James in consistently failing to beat the new PAC-12 powers in Oregon/Utah. He also failed to beat some lackluster teams, including Stanford in 2021, which finally got him axed.
Make no mistake, while most of the blame rightly so falls on Larry Scott for the PAC-12 dying, Clay Helton played a part too if Helton had USC as a premier program not just out West but nationally. No way USC would have considered leaving for the Big Ten because of the revenue a great USC would have brought to the Conference of Champions.
When he returned to the Coliseum, the Trojan faithful showed, contrary to popular belief, that they do care about football—they vigorously booed him throughout a romp, with USC dominating from start to finish, giving Helton one last sour memory in Los Angeles.
Lane Kiffin to Ole Miss 2026
I know this game hasn’t happened yet, but call me out if you have a problem with it being on the list. We all know the magnitude of Kiffin’s return to Oxford. I’ve had my plans set for this since it was announced. Get my pizza at 7:20, make the five-minute walk back home, grab a Dr. Pepper, sit down, and watch a scene of war unfold.
Nothing you could give or tell me would make me miss this game. That’s why it’s on the list. When a guy with no ties to either school has put an entire day around a game to see it, that’s when you know you’ve got a generational scene of crusade of hatred on your hands. No matter what happens on the field Saturday night, the reception and actions towards Kiffin will define the lore of this Magnolia Bowl matchup. You hope that games like this can live up to their immeasurable hype.
